The company is keen to continue its efforts for maintaining environment conditions and upgrading its level in all activities.

The most eminent achievements of this year are the following :

  • Registration of Aqaba Thermal Power Station (ATPS) as a clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Project. In order to comply with cleaner environmental standards and as Aqaba was becoming a tourist attraction and special economic zone, CEGCO took since 2002 concrete steps towards converting ATPS to natural gas firing and issued the tender documents for the conversion project, this project was considered to be a vital project among the sustainable projects to reduce the environmental pollution in Aqaba Special economical zone.

At earlier stage of planning CEGCO in 2000, CEGCO initiated correspondence for the purpose of applying CDM rules for this project, since this project will reduce CO2 emissions enormously, a GHG that is considered one of the main contributors to global warming, a major concern to international government especially those who ratified the Kyoto Protocol.

CEGCO then appointed Ecosecurities company to prepare necessary documents to United Nations frame work convention on climatic change (UNFCCC) obligations prepared all the documents necessary for the registration of the project.

The ATPS project was registered in september 30th, 2008 as a CDM project in United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The fuel switch technology is common throughout the world, but relatively new to Jordan. The fuel switch was completed in 2004, and ATPS has been running on NG imported via submarine pipeline (under the Gulf of Aqaba) from Egypt.

The primary reason for the fuel switch was to reduce pollution, to the high sulfur content of HFO, a"rotten egg" aroma was common before the fuel switch, and has since been averted.

The environmental benefits of fuel switch project are :-

    • Reduced CO2, SO2, NOX, and suspended particulate matter with associated aromas.

    • Reduced negative impact in the area since high sulfur content (4%) HFO is only used as a back- up fuel.

    • Smokestack output is no longer colored, but transparent no more visual pollution.

    • Acts as a clean technology demonstration project.

    • Good publicity and setting of an example in the region.

    • Reduced shipping / trucking of HFO (with related traffic and pollution).

    • Mitigation of climate change due to the reduction of CO2, the quantity of carbon reduction 400,000 tons.

  • Continuation of observing the pollutants resulted from power plants and doing necessary steps for decreasing thereof and maintaining them within the limits allowed under the Jordan environmental codes and standards.
