The company is keen to continue its efforts for maintaining environment conditions and upgrading its level in all activities. The most eminent achievements of this year are the following:
Registration of Aqaba Thermal Power Station as a clean development mechanism (CDM) project in (UNFCCC) on October 7th, 2008 Such registration will qualify the project to sell carbon reduction emissions (CERs) in the international market to Annex I countries granting considerable benefits to Jordan The ATPS project has conservatively reduced Green House gas (GHG) emission by minimum 400,000 tones of CO2 equivalent per year (t CO2 e /year).
CEGCO has got the approval from DNA for the conversion of Rehab Power Station as a CDM project. The Rehab project is a fuel switch and conversion project to combined cycle. This project is conservatively reduction Green House gas (GHG) emissions by about 600,000 tones of CO2 equivalent per year.
CEGCO was awarded the 2008 alternative energy awards for the projects of the years announced last November 2008 in Abu Dhabi, the awards committee selected Aqaba fuel switch project for this award, as it was the first to met settled criteria which enhance the reduction of CO2 emissions in the power generation.
CEGCO Power Plants - CDM Projects
Location |
Rehab Combined cycle Power Plant |
Type of Project |
Fuel switching of existing Frame 9 (2 units GT’s) from oil to natural gas instead of Diesel oil only |
Firing of natural gas will reduce GHG emission on per unit of production |
Converting the existing Rehab Frame 9 (2 units GT’s) from simple cycle to combined cycle will increase the efficiency by 50% also reduce the GHG because by firing the same amount of fuel an increase of 50% power which will as a result be obtained which mean that GHGs/KWH will be reduced |

Name of Project |
Registration of Rehab Power Station as a clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project in (UNFCCC) in order to sellCarbon Reduction Emission (CER’s) in the international market to Annex I countries |
Project Target |
Reduced CO2, SO2, NOX, and suspended particulate matter with associated aromas |
Reduced negative impact in the area since sulfur content (1.2%) Diesel is only used as a back- up fuel |
Smokestack output is no longer colored, but transparent no more visual pollution |
Acts as a clean technology demonstration project |
Good publicity and setting of an example in the region |
Reduced shipping/ trucking of Diesel (with related traffic and pollution) |
Mitigation of climate change due to the reduction of CO2, the quantity of carbon reduction 600,000 tons |
Project Schedule |
End of 2009 |
Project Status |
DNA approval as (CDM) project and preparation of requirements for (UNFCCC) registration |
| Location |
Aqaba Thermal Power Plant |
| Project Target |
Reduced CO2, SO2, NOX, and suspended particulate matter with associated aromas
| Reduced negative impact in the area since high sulfur content (4%) HFO is only used as a back- up fuel | |
